Walter R. White of Moline, passed peacefully Thursday, February 2, 2017, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL, surrounded by his loving family, following a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 11, 2017, at Riverside United Methodist Church, 712 16th Street, Moline, with a repass following at the church. Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, February 13, 2017, at the National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal. Those wishing to attend should meet at 9 a.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline. Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion Post #246. Memorials may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or the Disabled American Veterans (DAV).
Walter was born on September 19, 1927, in Jacksonville, NC, the son of George and Lillian Stringfield White. He married Doris Wallace in Chicago, IL. After serving in the U.S. Army, he graduated from North Carolina A&T, where he earned dual degrees in Mechanical & Electrical engineering, and then relocated to Moline. He retired after 37 years with Rock Island Arsenal, earning many awards. Walter later contracted with KONE Elevators and Escalators.
Walter was a lifetime member of Kappi Alpha Psi Fraternity. He was an active member of The Riverside Methodist Men’s Group and also a lifelong avid golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Doris “Dollie”; children, Garrison R. White, Moline, IL, Gregory S. (Loren) White, Sleepy Hollow, IL, Alicia Lyn (Duane) Burns, Spotsylvania, VA, Adrienne Joy (Douglas) Green, Windermere, FL, Walter Guy (Tina) White, Fishers, IN, and Todd D. (Tracy) White, Ardmore, PA; 9 grandchildren, Briana, Courtney, Cameron, Austin, Kennedy, Solomon, Olivia, Victoria, and Jordan. Walter chose to lovingly grandparent Zach and Morgan and to be a father and friend to the Chalfant children.
Surviving siblings include, Barbara Jean White, Gordon (Carol) White, Richard (Barbara) White, George White, Jr., and Frederick White. He is also uncle to many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Thelma, Helena, and Leontine; brother, William.
