Warren D. Meyers, age 78, of Rock Island, died Saturday, December 17, 2011 at Manor Care Rehabilitation Center, Davenport, IA.
Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial is at National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal, with military rites by V.F.W. Post 1303 Rock Island. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to V.F.W. Post 1303 and the Honor Flight of the Quad Cities, Korean Vet Era.
Warren was born September 8, 1933 in Kansas City, KS to Faulkner Cruzen and Lyda Augustine. He married Rose Grills in Pawcatuck, CT. He later was married to Joan Herron in Moline, IL in 1964. She preceded him in death. For the past 26 years he has been with the love of his life Maxine Grisham. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving 4 years in the Navy on board the ships USS Talladega APA 208 from 1952-1954. He then served in the US Naval Submarine Service on the ship USS Sea Robin SS 407 from 1954-1956. During his tour of duty he received the National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 2 stars, United Nations Service Medal and the Republic of Korea War Service Medal. He was a retired over the road truck driver for Murray Transportation in Davenport.
Warren was an active member of the VFW Post 1303 where he served as Post Chaplain. He was a life time member of the (NRA) National Rifle Association, Korean War Veterans Association Quad City Chapter 168, and the US Submarine Illowa Chapter.
Warren had a degree in accounting from Bradley University. In recent years he worked for H&R Block and Jackson Hewitt as a tax accountant. Warren received his early education from the Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, IL, before joining the Navy. He was a member of the RMA Rough Rider Association. He enjoyed motorcycle riding and fishing. He was a hockey fan of the Quad City Mallards and loved just spending time with family and friends.
Those left to honor his memory include his longtime companion and love Maxine, children: David and Lyda Meyers, Pawcatuck, CT, Linda Shamo and friend Anthony Clinton, Fort Wayne, IN, John F. Meyers and friend Julie Smith, Tustin, CA, Carolyn (Rod) Fowler, Port Byron, IL, and Dianne (Douglas) Allison, Rock Island. Grandchildren: Matthew, Luke, Aimee, Derek, Holly, Brandon, Melissa, Hannah, Adam and Rachael. Great grandchildren: Bryce, Samara, Jaelyn, Seth, Tyler, Jacob, Dylan, Collin, Lila, Alex and Addison., sisters, Beverly Morgan, Penny Dixon and brother Guy Cruzen, nephew, Dale and nieces, Peggy and Jenny, 2 special pet cats, Goldie and Susie.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and second wife, Joan.
