Warren was the born third son of Dr. Meredith and Alma (Eggers) Ostrom on March 26, 1933 in Rock Island, IL. He spent his childhood climbing water towers, swimming the Mississippi River and wandering through Blackhawk Park where he nourished his lifelong love of Native American culture and wildlife. He became an Eagle Scout and attended Rock Island High School where he was an exceptional athlete, wrestling and playing football. At seventeen he joined the Navy where he became a member of the Underwater Demolition Team, predecessor of today's Navy Seals. Warren served in the Korean War and was involved in the invasion of Incheon offensive.
Warren married Shirley Ann Swanson on January 30, 1954 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island, IL. He founded Ostrom Painting and Sandblasting, Inc. and was proud to have been the first civilian contractor to paint the White House having done so during the senior Bush administration. While he travelled the country to work on painting jobs, Warren spent his spare time combining three of his great loves-art, Native American Culture and woodcraft, finding objects from nature and using them as a basis for sculptures that can be seen in seven museums including the Hauberg Indian Museum that graces the park he wandered in as a boy. Warren also donated some of his stained glass art and wood sculptures to Trinity Hospital in hopes of offering comfort and inspiration to those who are going through health crises. Crises he understood, since he battled Muscular Dystrophy for over fifteen years.
Warren was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Rock Island and a longtime member of Moline American Legion Post #246, where he was part of the honor guard. He was a proud, outspoken American who never forgot the sacrifice veterans made.
Warren was a devoted father to daughter Kim, East Moline, IL and son David (Rita), Moline, IL, grandfather to Kate (Kevin) Bautch, CA, Drake and Rianna Ostrom, Moline, IL and Great grandfather to Sam and Owen Bautch.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley, his mother, father and brothers, Jack who died in infancy, Meredith (formerly of Middleton, WI), and Gary (formerly of Rock Island, IL.)
Warren leaves behind many devoted friends in the art field and the world beyond, a family that loves him, and a legacy of courage in the face of adversity.
