William “Billy” E. Ackley, 68, of Moline, IL, died Sunday, August 14, 2016, at UnityPoint Health – Trinity Rock Island, Rock Island, IL, where Jesus came and put his warm and loving arms around him and took him home.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, August 18, 2016, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline, where military honors will be conducted by the Moline American Legion Post 246. Visitation will be from 1 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. Per his wishes, cremation rites have been accorded and inurnment will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
Bill was born on March 5, 1948, in Davenport, IA, the son of Edward B. and Eleanor Payson Ackley. He married Gloria Prieto on August 6, 1977, in Moline. In his younger years, he worked as a brick layer. Later, he worked as a maintenance supervisor at the former Trinity Medical Centers for 29 years in both Moline and Rock Island.
Bill was a Marine Corps. veteran and a former runner who participated in the inaugural Bix 7. As a young adult, he played softball and racquetball. He was the treasurer of league and an avid bowler at Highland Park Bowl in Moline for over 30 years. He especially enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada every year and riding his Harley Davidson. Bill was a huge Illini fan and enjoyed the White Sox and the Detroit Lions. More than anything, he loved spending time with his family – especially his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Gloria; daughters, Gina (Martin) Bundy, IA, and Felicia Van Hyfte, Moline, IL; grandchildren, Tyler James, Austin Andre, Taylor Jean, Mariah Michelle, and Colton Michael; brother, Donald Ackley, San Tan Valley, AZ.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
