William “Bill” J. Stoeber, 92, of Orion, IL, passed away peacefully at his home, on Thursday, September 19, 2024.
Prior to services on Friday, there will be time to greet the family from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church, in Orion, IL. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 18, 2024, at the church, followed by a small graveside service by the family at the Rock Island National Cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. The memorial service will be livestreamed and the link will be found at the bottom of Bill's obituary page on Esterdahl's website. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Lake Okoboji United Methodist Camp and Retreat Center (www.okobojicamp.com).
Bill was born on February 24, 1932, in Armstrong, IA, the son of Oliver and Rose M. (Verbrugge) Stoeber. He married Shirley M. Mably on May 19, 1962, in Rock Island, IL. She preceded him in death on August 16, 2013. Bill graduated high school in Fenton, IA in 1949. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1953 during the Korean War, as an Aviation Electronics Technician P03. He attended Iowa State University and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1958 with a BA and received his master’s degree in business from the University of Arizona in 1971. Bill started with the Dept. of the Army in 1960, in Rock Island, IL. He continued his career at various locations, retiring after 33 years at the Rock Island Arsenal, in Quality Assurance, Chief of the Munitions Quality Operations Division.
Bill was a loving father, grandfather, husband, neighbor, and friend. He enjoyed running, traveling, canoeing, camping, skiing, and many other outdoor activities. He was a great storyteller, listener, and life counselor. Bill loved his community and those around him.
Survivors include his children, Jeff (Tamara) Stoeber, Doug Stoeber, and Kurt (Jennifer) Stoeber; grandchildren, Madison, Delaney, Shane, Austin, Samantha, Abby, David, and London; great-grandchild, Maddox; and sister, Sue Tow.
He was preceded in death by his parents Oliver and Rose, his wife, Shirley, and brother, Steve Stoeber.
