William, affectionately known as "Bill," was born on December 17, 1946, in Rock Island, IL, to Zelma (Lear) and Henry Miles. On December 26, 1986, he married the love of his life, Pamela Shock, at their home in Rock Island, officiated by a local judge.
Bill's life revolved around his family. He made it his priority to show love and devotion to those closest to him. His caring nature extended beyond his family, touching the lives of friends and neighbors, and making a positive impact wherever he went.
He treasured moments with loved ones, played tennis with enthusiasm, and remained a loyal Chicago Bears fan for over 65 years!
A proud US Army Veteran, Bill served with distinction, achieving the rank of Sergeant and completing two consecutive tours in Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. He led his platoons with valor, earning numerous victories. Assigned to the 101st Airborne Unit, he completed over 70 jumps, demonstrating his bravery and commitment. Despite his wartime experiences, Bill had an aversion to flying in civilian life and preferred the slower travel pace of a car or train!
Bill's admiration for the American Bald Eagle symbolized his values of strength, courage, and the freedoms he fought to protect. He was a member of the Local American Legion, Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 299 and AT&T Pioneers.
In his professional life, Bill dedicated 32 years to AT&T as a telephone line splicer. After retiring, Bill expressed his desire to bring joy to others, stating, “I want to make people smile”. He enjoyed delivering pizzas for Happy Joe's in Moline, and flowers for Flannery Florist in Milan, businesses owned by his friends.
