Cynthia Gross

Cynthia Gross, 102, of Silvis, formerly of Moline and East Moline, IL, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 7, 2015, at Christ United Methodist Church, 3801 7th Street, East Moline. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memorial Estate. Memorials may be made to Good Sheep Sunday School Class. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., Moline, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Mrs. Gross was born on May 29, 1913, in Stark County, Rural Wyoming, IL, the daughter of W.A. and Mary Ann Graves Dixon. She was married on November 19, 1932, to Clair F. Gross in St. Louis, and he preceded her in death on November 6, 1994.

Cynthia was employed at home by the Illinois 4H Clubs and the Rock Island Homemakers during the 1950s. She also worked with Home Bureau Extension. She was an outstanding and devoted homemaker for her family.

She was a member of Christ United Methodist church for more than 70 years and participated in numerous church activities. She was an active member of UMW and assisted with the Good Sheep Sunday School Class until her death. She devoted her life to caring for her family, elderly family members, ill friends and wherever she was needed. She was well known for her prowess as a cook and baker and especially for her famous "butterhorns". She was most recently honored for her over 70 years of dedicated service by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Also, she served luncheons for Rotary for their help with Circle.

In the past, she was an avid bowler and enjoyed cooking, reading, and sewing her counted cross stitch pictures for which she won Best of Show awards in state competitions.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Donna Pirtle; brothers, Harold and Ralph. She is survived by her children, Nancy Yelton, widow, Nashville, TN, Larry (Sylvia) Gross, Moline; 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 13 great great grandchildren.
