Jane Schmidt

Jane Schmidt, 94, of Orion, IL, died Wednesday, November 16, 2016, at Heartland Health Care Center, Moline, IL.

A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. with a visitation one hour prior on Wednesday, November 23, 2016, at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd., 6601 38th Avenue, Moline.  Per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and burial of cremains will be at National Cemetery at the Rock Island Arsenal.  Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2208 East 52nd Street Suite B, Davenport, IA, 52807, or to Western Township Library.

Jane was born on July 8, 1922, in Monmouth, IL, the daughter of Ward Edwin and Mildred B. McKelvey Soper.  She married Theodore “Ted” James Schmidt, Jr. on January 23, 1944, in Galesburg, IL, and he preceded her in death on December 6, 2015.  She began her career as a substitute English teacher for the Orion School District and went on to teach English full time for United Township High School.  After obtaining her Master’s Degree, Jane taught English at Blackhawk College.

Jane enjoyed quilting at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Orion.  She loved to read and was a leader of McGuffy Readers at the Western Township Library in Orion.  In her earlier years, she was a member of King’s Daughters.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Jane (Egil) Moen, Orion, IL; son, Steven James (Joy Van Camp) Schmidt, Galena, IL; 3 grandsons, Kent Moen, Aurora, IL, Paul (Jamie) Moen, Davenport, IA, and Tim (Stephanie) Moen, Orion, IL; 2 foster grandsons, Trinh (Nga) Nguyen and Tam (Lan) Nguyen, both of Kristiansand, Norway; and 15 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
